So I recently directed a music video for Rubblebucket's single "L'Homme" off their new album Omega La La.

It dropped today (8/1/11) on music blog Consequence of Sound.

Heres a blurb we wrote to explain it:

The L'homme music video for Rubblebucket, (literally translated as
"The Man") engages the audience in a hypothetical reversal of power by
eroticising the image of big brother and reimagining him as a
beautiful man. Originally conceived as a tryptich for live
performance, 3 performance artists were filmed making gestures at the
camera. Recontextualizing these images for the music video, they
were then processed, scratched, glitched and rescanned in real-time
using custom video processing system designed by video artist/director
Eric Barry Drasin. Combined with footage later shot of lead singer
Kalmia Traver, Drasin weaves a psychadelic landscape that playfully
pokes fun at power relations between the watcher and the watched.

So my video installation for Marc Jacobs/Rob Pruitt at PS1 last weekend got a bunch of good press.

New York Magazine put it in the Approval Matrix as "highbrow" and "brilliant"

So I finally got a card reader for my camera so I can look at some of the pictures I took in 2009. There wasn't much but I did document an installation I did at school that I think I posted about earlier. This is from Psyborg Psalms.

And here I have some photos from when my good friend Pete St. John helped me make a loft bed in his awesome woodshop. Pete's an incredible dude, having started a business doing mold remediation, he does amazing woodwork on the side, literally building everything in his apartment. And NOW he's starting a biodiesel company! In this picture I am doing something really impressive looking with some kind of tool that makes sparks.

Cameron and myself were doing a show that involved projecting into a fog machine in Cam's bass drum while we had a live camera processing the audience waving around glowsticks and then being run through audioreactive filters on my computer.

This is a fragment of a larger performance called Psyborg Psalms. This fragment was part of an installation featuring 3 television sets singing in 3 part harmony embedded in a pixel swarm that was falling out of the ceiling. Its being adapted for an interactive sing along performance.

On Better

This week I moved into the House of Love. A creepy old house on the water, its dimly lit with assorted baroque antiques adorning every dusty corner and an odd collection of hippies and alumni who've hung out here since the late 70's. Its somewhat of an institution around Purchase College. They like pagan holidays and throwing big parties where hundreds of people come and middle aged men with ponytails shred on out of tune guitars until the sunrise blinds everyone who isn't already cross eyed from drinking.

This place is everything I ever wanted and I am deeply frightened.

This week Steve Caldwell passed away. An early proponent of the "Better" theory, Steve lived the majority of his life as a quadrapelegic after a debilitating car accident in 1963. Better Farm was founded in the early 70's with his accident insurance money.

The Better theory is about acknowledging that a problem is an opportunity for spiritual growth. To not balk at unpleasantness. To confront the moment with determined resolve. To not flinch. To observe.

I'm sitting here with a head cold listening to the sounds of I-95 as tractor trailers vibrate my windows. My housemates have to walk through my room in their sandals because we live in a railroad. The house cats are fighting and breaking dishes. There are washed up hippies hanging out on the porch. Dust is settling in the corner. The power is flickering. The heat is low. The pagans are smiling. We are a bastion of apathy and aesthetic idealism in a sea of conformity and affluence.

Bukowski said to beware people who preach love...

I say we're all in it together.

Hello Friends,

A few meta thoughts as all of this happens. I've been supremely inspired by my friends lately. People have really been pulling through. I was personally moved by 5 of my friends last week when I moved into a new house (which btw is totally sick, on the water in CT and we throw crazy parties!! open invite to come up and go kayaking whenever anyone wants) , and one of my friends built me a loft bed. And now I see people coming together to help figure out whats going to happen to Better Farm.

This makes me extremely happy and confident that we are all going to be OK.

Being OK has been somewhat of a preocupation of mine as of late, as I often seem to be unsure about whether or not that is going to be the case.

The reason I bring this up is because I want to talk about community. As some of you may know, me and Coley started a documentary on Better Farm a few years ago that has yet to be completed. Intentional Community has been a keen interest of mine for a long time and I've had a few years to stew on what the nature of a community is. Now that I am immersed in the New Media world, there is a lot of discussion of virtual communities and how they form and what they're all about.

I think one of the important lessons from Steve and the other Better Farmers is that a functional and successful community has a purpose, or intention. The reason the original commune didn't work was because their purpose wasn't clearly defined and was muddled in a bunch of counter cultural pretension and pot smoke.

Ultimately Better Farm was about creating a place for Steve and in its later years has realized that purpose. Steve's vision was that after he left, Better Farm would once again become somewhat of a community for Coley and her friends.

And here we are.

A crisis is introduced and we are coming together to find intelligent solutions that are sustainable and in everyone's best interest.

This is ultimately what I think Steve wanted to happen. Better Farm is our first obstacle and I am supremely confident that it will be met with exceeding grace.

However if I may, I would like to introduce a more subtle theme that occurred to me today, and that is the real purpose of this community is not about Better Farm as a physical place, but about us. We are the community that needs to be cultivated, a virtual community and to that end, Coley reached out to us and we are coming together to find a solution, but the real issue isn't the farm. Its about us as a Braintrust helping one another figure stuff out.

A Better Braintrust.

This doesn't have to end with the farm, and I propose, although somewhat prematurely, that this idea of the braintrust/board of directors be extended to all of us. Because between all of us, there is enough talent and intelligence to make sure that we are ALL going to be OK. And i think that is the purpose, and what ultimately everyone is gearing up to do.

I know I feel more comfortable knowing that there is a whole group of people out there who are willing to pitch in their talent, wisdom, and compassion and help me figure out what to do when a problem arises.

Hopefully you do too.

So if you'll indulge me, here's to you, the Better Braintrust.

The Carrie Dashow Institute of Applied Metamorphasis

Me and Abby Weg just applied for the visionary drawings show being curated by Matt Bua. We spent all night on this, but even still we're submitting a few days late.

this is the description I wrote for it:

The Institute is a morphing structure made out of live plants and trees that form a canopy structure
once fully grown. The creation process involves clearing a section of forest and then replanting
native species in exact formations so a fake forest grows in the real one. Once inside the institute,
the user completes a circuit that summons an animal spirit by completing a 10 minute workout on the
stair stepper to heaven. This activates the spirit totem which in absorbing kinetic energy from the
user, magically transforms them into a better version of themselves (and perhaps works off lunch).
The totem is comprised of various broken electronics salvaged from Carrie Dashows apartment that
she gave me because she didn’t feel like shlepping it to her new apartment. Thus, the Dashow Institute. Having burned off a few calories, the user is now in prime condition for self realization and a higher
state of conciousness.

I don't know if we'll get accepted or not, but if we do maybe we'll get to make it!!
